In addition to Short Rotation Coppice and Miscanthus, other potential energy crops are currently being trialed in Wales and the UK. Switchgrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) and Reed Canary Grass (Panicum virgatum L) are the front runners in this area of research. Other crops being considered include the Giant reed (Arundo donax L) , Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L) and Praire cord grass (Spartina pectinata L.).
A good web source of information on these crops can be accessed through the Welsh Biomass Centre website. In addition CALU have demo plots of the energy grasses that can be visited in Glynllifon near Caernarfon and at Gelli Aur. Details of open days at these sites can be found on the events page of this website.
